Since my initial encounter with the concept in law school many years ago, I've come to realize an undeniable truth:
ESTATE PLANNING IS OVERPRICED AND NEEDLESSLY COMPLEX.
Let me be clear: estate planning is vital and should be viewed as a necessity by everyone. Yet, the inherent importance, combined with its initially perceived complexity (which is often overstated), has unfortunately led some to exploit it as an overpriced service. When you factor in the traditional legal practice model—standard business hours and high hourly fees—it transforms into a burdensome and expensive endeavor, adding to the idea that only the wealthy need estate planning. Unfortunately, this deters many from embracing estate planning's many benefits.
This lesson coupled with a childhood filled with time spent watching classic TV shows with my Grandparents, admiring figures like John Wayne and James Stewart, patriotism, and a general aversion to overpaying, among other things… and voila
